Dog Licensing Guide & Requirements

New York State law requires that all dogs over the age of four months be licensed through the village or town that they reside in. Therefore, the Village requires that all residents license their dogs annually. This is to ensure the health and safety of our residents and their pets.
If you need to license your dog through the Village for the first time, please use the link below to download the application form. As required by NYS law, you will need to submit proof that your dog has been vaccinated against rabies. We cannot issue the license without this certificate so you MUST provide it. If your dog has been spayed or neutered, you will also need to provide a copy of the certificate as this will determine the licensing fee.
For spayed or neutered dogs, the licensing fee is $5.00. For unaltered dogs, the fee is $15.00.
Once your dog has been licensed, you will receive a blue dog tag with your specifically assigned Tag Number. That number is unique to the dog it was licensed under and cannot be worn by any other dog. The tag MUST be worn by them at all times. If you've misplaced or lost their tag, a replacement will be provided to you for a fee of $5.00.
There are no limits on the number of dogs one can own in the Village. However, they must all be licensed. Failure, or refusal, to license your dogs can, and will, result in tickets and/or fines as determined by the Dog Control Officer.
If for any reason you cannot make it into the office during our regular hours listed above, you can mail-in or email all of the required forms. Additionally, your veterinarian or the clinic where your dog received their rabies vaccination can email or fax over a copy of their certificate. They can email it to clerk@sjvny.org or fax it to 518-568-7716.
